Sommelier

The sommelier is of course, the wine waiter, the person on the restaurant floor who is an expert at pairing wine with food.  But this is a far cry from the original meaning.  A sommelier was once the member of the court in charge of supplies when pack animals were in use.  Somme is the word for pack.  Today in French, sommelier means butler.
