Vermouth

Vermouth has a surprising history.  Just like you and your cousin’s first wife’s new boyfriend’s brother like the same movie, Vermouth is the French pronunciation of the German word “wermut” which means wormwood.  Wormwood is also known as absinthe and is an ingredient in the liquor that we call ‘absinthe’.  It is also commonly an ingredient in Vermouth, but not always.  Vermouth is a fortified wine often flavored with different herbs and spices.  People first infused wine for medicinal purposes, and wormwood was thought to cure intestinal ailments.

Vermouth is found in Martini’s and Manhattan’s.
