Piggy Bank

Today we learn the story of the piggy bank.  The original piggy bank was a kitchen clay pot.  More than 600 years ago,  before banks existed in England, people would stash money in kitchen clay pots.  The orange earthenware crockery was called pygg.

The term pygg pot was first used and then came the phrase pygg bank.  You can see with just a little stretch of the imagination the piggy bank was invented.  And now all children in the English speaking world and beyond will forever associate money sense with that muddy barnyard animal.
