The Black Forest is a wooded area of Southern Germany. You probably know two foods that hail from this region. We see Black Forest ham all the time at the grocery store. You probably, once or twice, have run into Black Forest cake, too.
Black Forest ham is actually a legally protected product; ham labeled as such must come from that region.
The Black Forest cake also comes from that region and is known for its cherry and chocolate goodness.
It’s called a Black Forest cake because of a type of cherry liquor, Schwarzwälder Kirsch(wasser) that comes from that region. Although in America we generally make that cake without liquor, it is illegal to sell it without that regional liquor in Germany.
